I recall,(from a workshop I attended in HK) Dick Beatty (Richard W Beatty) proffessor at the Michigan Stephen Ross School of Management sharing in a very lucid manner the performance management system in the institute that he thought was the reason for the meteoric rise of the institute.

He said sometime back, in a major revamp of the performance management system the institute did away with all designations and hierchies amongst proffesors. Every one today has one designation and the sole criterian to keep one's job is to be worldclass in one's domain. The institute has never looked back ever since.

Aditya

Teaching and/or "imparting of knowledge" , as an activity, was highly regarded in the old days, and those doing this were very highly regarded and respected in our country. The teachers took great pains in their work, and while money /facilities etc were certainly appreciated , the motivation to teach was never money.

This Merit Pay thing stinks. This is not a factory where you can write technical manuals on quality assurance, and expect compliance to translate into superior "goods".

We need to respect the teaching profession more. Today's young people don't realize that life is all about continuous learning, and that you never cease to be a student. Associating money in profit making ways with this profession has never worked, as is witnessed by the increasing number of quick coaching classes, the falling standard of students over the years, and increasing incidences of student cheating .
