Very nice post! Must compliment you on your memory. Amazing. My father too had a car. A landmaster. But he was clear I should travel by school bus only. He wanted us to be part of the group. There were others select few who had the privilege of having a driver dropping them. Class 11 and 12, I used to travel by bicycle- my dad got a second hand cycle! During my first year of college, I used to go by public bus. It was fun hanging at the edge of the entrance. During the second year of college, I had the luxury of a TVS 50 Moped, which was the third one launched in erstwhile Calcutta. The last year of college was a combination of TVS 50 and standard herald car. Those were the days.

that is one reason i never took a first class pass ( student concessions make it so cheaper ) and the womens compartment women behave as if they just landed from the showroom – "touch me not attitude" no third seat – etc etc.

second class means – after 15 minutes of standing you get a seat for 20 minutes. also compels you to stand and read…

once on a long distance train travel i was amazed that the 1st class ac traveller – an IAS officer shared with me his lunch – after that i left my stereotypes behind. i was grateful for garma garma rotis and subzi.

Those were the days of school and college when we were one with nature and natural behaviour.

The difference that i face when i travel between Airconditioned coaches and II sleeper on the trains is exactly the same !!

There is so much fun when the air is free !

Conditioned air leads to conditioned behaviour. I guess !

Enjoyed this post a lot.Wise cracking conductors are a separate breed altogehter.

(Actually, the ladies second class in the "local" is the worst as far as wisecracks go.Which are sometimes spiteful...

An exquisitely made up girl, posing in heels and some really complicated outfit near the door after getting in at Bandra, was blocking the door area at Andheri, for some fisherwomen with baskets. The entire compartment cracked up when they heard the fisherwoman say " Aga Padmini, haal ki zara, putlyawani ubhi hai ....)
