The decline (should I say demise) of the trade union movement in India is a calamity. Despite the fact that those of us, like yourself Viveksaab, cut our teeth on unions and may have found it irritating, but I am sure that we all agree that trade unions performed a very valuable role in providing a balance to unbridled capitalistic greed. Growth for the sake of growth is the philosophy of the cancer cell and that is what is happening to our trade and industry. Our business leaders are completely free from internal ethics and morals and lack of effective trade unions has freed them from external checks and balances. Mallya is a symptom (as is Roy of Sahara) of a very deep and fatal malaise. In our IT/ITES companies it is 'illegal' for people to form a union. How something which the Constitution of India grants every citizen as a right can be made illegal by an employer is not something that anyone wants or has the courage to question. Yet these same people who deny Indian citizens their Constitutional Rights masquerade as the saviors of this country. They openly support fascist politicians who promise to remove for them whatever rules still remain. They decimate wildlife, desecrate the land and displace humanity in their single-minded pursuit of material wealth which they then flaunt and squander with gay abandon. Mukesh Ambani's monstrosity built on misappropriated land in the midst of abject poverty is another case in point. It is our businessmen and women who institutionalised corruption which our politicians and bureaucrats supported. The disease has left none untouched, including our armed forces. Corruption in India is no longer an aberration - it is an aspiration. That is their legacy. There is a dire and urgent need for the revitalization of the Trade Union Movement - keeping it free from politicians and focusing on what is good for those poor millions who make Vijay Mallya's yachts and Mukesh Ambani's jets move.
