Organising unions in the IT and ITes sector is certainly not easy. Unlike the workmen in the brick and mortar industries, the click and modem based industry has the knowledge worker as well as a large proportion of female employees and they are averse to the common forms of agitation like slogan shouting, demonstrations and other methods our Unions traditionally employ. The IT law also makes it tough for individuals to carry carnards and campaigns against the company through Facebook, You Tube etc. and both the It and ITes industries operate without the onerous obligation of Chapter V B. They can exit the business anytime and the employees would only be entitled to retrenchment compensation. That is why even during the meltdown, we have seen many exits taking place, but happening without the turmoil and pains that we often see in the brick and mortar industry. The Industry has also recruited large numbers with the business cycle changing and many who were out of jobs are happy picking up what they like and the environment has made it challenging for unions to get membership involvement and commitment to the organisation.

It would certainly be a formidable challenge to have unions in this environment and any organisation that seeks to improve the quality of life of employees and seeks to resolve issues and greivances in a non-adversial approach is indeed doing yeoman service for those working in the field and also for its members and deserves to be supported.

Dr.R.
It would certainly be a formidable challenge to have unions in this environment and any organisation that seeks to improve the quality of life of employees and seeks to resolve issues and greivances in a non-adversial approach is indeed doing yeoman service for those working in the field and also for its members and deserves to be supported.
