Nostalgia, old incidences occurred on the stairs, so many things. Glad you talked about the painful knees ( old age) and the gratitude to the escalators. They are the present day stairs and can be made to look equally beautiful.
I recommend you a book called Jharoka in English by a friend of mine Architect Narendra Dengle. It is on Windows. Being an architect, it has more of its architectural value than aesthetics. But your blog reminded me of the book.
