As always, in a lucid and simple but effectively way you have put forth the plight of already exploited worker. I feel from seventies, the pendulum of Industrial Relations has swung to the other end. True some unions played havoc in seventies and eighties but now it is a very different story.
Have we forgotten the genesis of Contract Labour act ?

Can there be a middle way ?

Sir,

It's quite an impactful blog. That is, if the Employers sit up and take a note of the exploitation that has been going on in their backyard. But more so, one has to look at the way the present Govt is trying to increase employability among the Indian workforce. Neem is a garb under which exploitation of workers takes place and it is prevalent across all Industries today. The scheme prescribes minimum wage in unskilled category to be paid to the trainees. But what's stopping the industries to pay them more than the minimum wages?

As long as the Govt doesn't come up with a sustainable action plan to increase employability, such exploitation is bound to happen. The industries could do to alleviate this exploitation by paying them more than the minimum wages and ensuring their heath and safety at the workplace.

Also since they are trainees, they cannot even raise an Industrial Dispute.

Just some of my thoughts that I wanted to share with you.

Dear Vivek,

Insightful as always. I believe that the exploitation today is mire and the frustration greater. In the 70s and 80s at least there were strong unions that could have acted as a balancing force. today even that does not exist. Added to that the government is a spectator and the wage differentials are the highest today between the topmost executive and the lowest employee ( 1200 times) as per a recent report. If cost are an issue, why is it that all costs are squeezed out of the lowest level of employees while the highest get huge increases even when their salaries are already obscene? I think more than ever the need for strong unions is now.

Really it is Pathetic situation. These so called MNCs (Hyndai) have come to India to exploit vulernable poor workers. More blame goes to those Contractors who are goons and politicians who pay them meagrely. When we will be Humane and treat labour with dignity??

This brazen governance is a possible lift off from Gujarat. I had once met with Dada Samant, the elder brother of the dreaded union leader Datta Samant. He insisted that in Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad, courts were discouraged from entertaining labour disputes and that the force or voice of unions was being crushed, extra constitutionally. Dignity is not an option for capital. In a winner takes it all politics, the costs of humanity are rising exponentially.
