I think I was correct last night when I said that your thoughts genuinely deserved the compliments .
How can we as rational human beings be aware of our unconscious biases particularly when dealing with other human beings.Thank you as always dear Vivek for being a conscience-keeper whether consciously or not!

As usual, scathing attack on the policies of the organizations, their urge to make more and more profits by employing cheap contract labour, and government's apathy.

I think we have forgotten the genesis of contract labour Act. Government officials grant RC's routinely, without blinking an eye lid.

More over we HR professionals also participate in the proceedings under the name " Policy of the company". I think it is time for us to start a movement, not to employ contract labour in such rampant disregard to law , morality , and equity.

Wonderful insights that combine fact, philosophy and objective commentary sir.
Where does the work to transform this begin?
Social change and rational dialogue that is frank and fearless would lead to requisite policy creation...and more role models and success stories to inspire employers and unions to take new approaches...

Dear Vivek,

An excellent write up based on your study with case examples.

You have raised a very valid question in the writeup . ‘What’s the enterprise's Employee Relations (ER) policy?’.

Reality is very few enterprises have framed an ER policy , and if framed, they need ensuring informing the same to all the relevant parties .Developing such a policy requires a lot of thought ,as the policy should act as a guideline in approach on finding solutions to various ER issues that arise at varying time.

It is time that enterprises framed an ER policy and publicise the same ,as it will help both the enterprise and the people working for the enterprise to understand the approach in handling ER issues.

Regards,

Rajen

This is one of the master pieces of Vivek Patwardhan. The issue of "Fear" has been explained “fearlessly”. I really appreciate the effort and courage to show mirror of IR scenario in India to all stakeholders i.e. Government, Employers, Unions and society. Human beings are different and better than the animals as they are endowed with the power to think, power to reason and this article reveals that wisdom and also strong commitment towards humanity, justice, liberty and fraternity. There is a dire need to show that competitiveness and sustainability is possible with human values. Seekers of means are more in number than the seekers of meaning, but it is those few who have the additional electron like a dope in a semi-conductor, can cause avalanche of conductivity all through. I appreciate the skill of Vivek Patwardhan of communicating with others who also suffer but cannot 'see'. Such individuals like Vivek can perform a role of cultural leadership in the Society that creates hopes…….

Dr Zahid Gangjee writes:

Dear Vivek,

Just got time to read your address "Fear, Hope and Issues in I R Today".

I could recognize some of the examples from your earlier writings but the way you organised the talk was wonderful. It was aimed for an audience that believed there was a future for business in India but you clearly made them see that it was a pipe dream unless they truly understood what was really being done to the working-age segment of our population by many segments of our society.

Thank you for sharing.

Warmest regards - Zahid

This speech is just spot on.I couldn't agree more with every word that I have come across in this speech. It speaks volumes on the current scenario of employees' relation, the government being a staunch advocator of militancy and going the extra mile by rolling out schemes in the form NEEM which are of exploitative nature and makes the condition of worker even more hapless.Under such adverse situation which has been created by the government, there is an hope for the worker in the form employer himself who must take decision by analyzing what is the repercussion of his decision, and that his decision should not merit that of the government, his decision should have a humane touch to it.
