Given the current competitive businesses environment, balancing both business imperatives and People Focus would be a challenging task
Thanks for sharing your perspective too sir

Well focused Vivek as always-both sides of the coin.Perhaps some introspection for teachers who teach Management in business schools to reflect on sowing seeds in young minds to develop thinking which is unpaternalistic yet business-oriented

The good, the bad and the ugly all out in the open! An excellent article sir that has accurately captured the myriad lenses through which the HR function is viewed and the ramifications of the same on people focus in the associate organizations.
I particularly liked the point raised on NEEM and it brought to my mind the elusive balance between the economic and social costs of engaging temporary labor. Also the diametrical viewpoints on extended maternity leave made me reflect on the issue.
Surely, writing an article that has successfully gathered perspectives so many issues in the HR arena would have come at appreciable time and labor and I am glad that you wrote it because the article contains a veritable wealth of information.

Aptly summed up. Workplace is a reflection of the developments in the world around us. An additional perspective that I submit... Organizations are grappling with the challenges of managing an urban workforce that on one hand is demanding, impatient, unrelenting and driven by consumerism and a 'what's in it for me' attitude. Not surprisingly the new Millennium leadership in organizations that focuses on living by the quarter is comprised from this group. On the other hand we have a larger section of our workforce that is in many ways 'unemployable'. Our society grappled with the excitement of changes, social and economic, by technology and communication. But we failed to invest in up-skilling and developing the competencies of the workforce. Working knowledge of Microsoft office was considered development at best as the MNC demanded it. The pain of this insensitivity are best manifested in the educational institutions that are now embracing, 'application oriented learning' and 'outcome based education'. Sadly, none of the advocates of HRD be it the practitioner, the union, the Management and of course the Government is aligned on this. Entitlement seems to be the driver. Somewhere the age old maxim...'teach the man how to fish...' seems to have been forgotten. The way forward will be to rightly intensify our investment in building human potential and capability. Prosperity for business and society is integral to betterment of our people.

Nice practical and real examples. You raise a fundamental point as always. Today there is tokenism and lip sympathy to people orientation. We have forgotten the HUMAN in Human Relations. And give the excuse of time availability not to I test in RELATIONS! Sad state of affairs
