I always, envy your ability to articulate complex things in a simple way, Vivek? The speach shows how the world treats and will treat such workers (even the knowledge workers are threatened ii not today's world).

I saw the interview between Raghuraman and NDTV's Prannoy Roy where without naming the research happening in US, they were saying that the findings point towards a civil war happening in India. I keep talking about such a possibility in my circles, but never thought that such a research is happening!

Very well written and very much appropriate and relevant. The growing organisations in India hardly put any thought in this respect before going for more and more automation and modernization. The various HR forums happening all across the country and the so called Business Excellence awards also avoid stressing on these points as it may lead to a sort of direct criticism of the government policies & practices. Thank you very much for coming out with an eye opener. Hope the top leaders and industrialists of our country get a chance to go through your writing and try to realign their thoughts...

Thorough study and marvelous presentation! Thanks for sharing.

I really feel employers and HR fraternity together can pause, analyze and derive a policy for the economic rights of workers Else we will be introducing a society of people who are unable to earn so they grab/ steal/ snatch.

Excellent Vivek. As is your standard- valuable insights on realities of today and tomorrow. As I read it ,a few home truths come to mind--
1) We have many more "'professionally qualified'' Managers now than 2/3 decades back
2) Many more Awards/Seminars on Best Practices in HR today

In other words, there is much more knowledge and learning available today than earlier times and innovative HR practices keep evolving. But, the state of ER is a major cause for concern A few thoughts -
a) MNC's normally leave the conduct and practice of ER to local country Management who are expected to discharge all fudiciary and statutory requirements. So most practices and decisons are locally driven.
b)The Company Annual report mentions People as their greatest Asset. Now CSR pictures are also added . With godo results the 3P's are delivered.....
b) The Union Leadership are interested only for their members --are focussed on handsome wage rise and benefits as long as ''heavy and dirty work'' was pushed to Contract labour. The other day, it was reported that the Railways are not paying minimum wages to most Contract labour. All the Biggies have Unions in the Railways but perhaps the 2 day strike was more of a priority to them !!!

The 3 suggestions provided by you are very good and merit consideration .
Regards,
Vineet

Mr JN Amrolia says:
Vivek,
What can I say!
So true and so well put. Wish the HR fraternity would pause, reflect and think through this issue--equity and fairness appear to having been given the go by to the alter of showcasing to management the maximum short terms gains 'procured ' by HR.
We seem to vacillate between expediency to buy short term peace or trying to squeeze the last possible paise on the labour front (though labour costs normally only range from 5-12% of total costs). Rampant casualisation of labour; misuse of 'trainees' under guise of skilling, closure of factories in the guise of non viability to take advantage of high land prices( Pfizer is the latest)-have all become the norm.
Living in our artificial bubbles we forget that poverty any where is a danger to prosperity every where.
Sorry. Got carried away.
Regards

Diligent piece as usual from you for such a socially relevant topic. Perhaps your examples do show a ray of hope and that the pangs of Conscientious Corporations may not be dead, but a flicker in the darkness, nonetheless. Ian Bremmer writes : "The point is that as technology continues to progress, the world will have more and more stakeholders capable of driving geopolitical developments, and many won’t be national governments.
