Public discourse has descended to new lows – such lows that one wonders whether it could slide any further and fears that we have not yet seen the pit.

I remember watching televised election debates in the UK in the ’90s. No drama, no vitreol, just plain and simple statement of one’s own (party’s) agenda. Unfortunately we never seem to know what any party’s agenda is and even if we do, it seems to keep changing to a ‘before – after’ scenario.

The internet has given everyone a keyboard and with it, the ability to say things out loud without having to look at the face of the other person. This is step one. In step two, people start seeing that other people hold extreme opinions like their own and use crass language… thereby making it ‘normal’
