Vivek reading this obviously hits you in the face as normally you tend to ignore the human situation behind the job loss statistics.
Long ago when I was in Siemens on Thane Belapur Road n we had negotiated a "good" VRS with the internal union led by Com Dhume n AD Shastry I had initiated with Dr Dutta of TISS a longitudinal study of how the employees have fared 4 to 5 years after VRS
Despite financial counseling and what not that was a part of the VRS, no surprise to find 90 ex employees h@d run through their handsome settlement amounts n were back on streets in dire conditions.
HR managers must understand this reality and your writeup does take people behind the scene to understand the underbelly of such manpower reduction schemes. Right sizing finally if at all benefits only managements. Sad but true

Dear Vivek, Thanks for sharing
This does leave a sad feeling ..unfortunate but true. The c downturn is witness to many such developments . All sops and efforts to ease pain of downsizing (monetary or otherwise) at best provide temporary relief but not the solution to people who go thru the ordeal.

Labour Reforms in India have been on the Agenda of Industry and Global experts thru decades ...however there is a need for the right balance . We need to look at matters holistically. Unfair labour practices have to termed as 'Unfair' under the law...tokenism and intent do not deliver

Just to share an example ...In the draft Labour Code on IR under discussion ,the Govt has proposed 45 days wages against current 15 days per year of service as RC ..., Industry wants to push this down to 30 days per year . I feel anything below 75/90 days per year is low.

These reasonable Labour costs have to accepted as costs of business. Whenever land cess or taxes go up, doesn't everyone quietly pays up

It is really sad /frustrating to know the plight of workers and their families when companies get closed for whatever reasons. We have seen earlier how mill workers and families were adversely affected when textile mills were closed. These stories get repeated when no proactive action is taken by regulatory authorities /lenders/auditors. Your blogs are always sensitive and have touch of empathy.

Dear Vivek, The trauma is real. It is very sad. Coping with life post a job loss is so very tough. Even when we offered a VRS in the early nineties in Cadburys we had social workers talking to every workmans family and being transparent on options, payments and opportunities post VRS. I think Mr Shrouti and his centre along with support from companies could organize such counseling and post VRS treatment of money so that such families get good , solid, practical, impartial advice. Happy to help

Very well researched, Vivek. Provides insights about how the rise and fall of business impacts the lives of people in ways that often are hard and crushing. While one cannot change their fortunes, one can tell their stories with empathy to spread awareness about a tragic humane condition.

It is wonderful the way you are still dedicated to the hunt for humane stories in industries
