Btw Sir nothing has changed in years. in 1993 I met you in your room in Asian Paints and I said I joined Hindustan Lever as so and so… I remembered you said what’s in the title, tell me what I have learnt, studied new? You are consistent in your guidance and philosophy.

Truly speaking, persons like Mr. Asif knowingly or unknowingly provide great inspiration to the young generation. Your contribution in his achievements, to my understanding, are the thought provoking words which probably acted as the stimuli driving him towards the greater goals in life. He might not have become the VP(HR) but his achievements are far beyond anybody who is endowed with all senses in excellent condition….

Mohammed Asif is a good friend of mine. I am very pleased that he met you. I would have suggested to him that he should. I read what you said to him Vivek. The challenge when ‘advising’ anyone, visually challenged or not, is to keep yourself out of it. What I achieved or couldn’t, is not a measure for someone else.

As for Asif’s desire to become the head of HR, I agree with you that it is hardly a worthy desire – apologies to all HR Heads who read this.

In 1994 when I set up my own company Yawar Baig & Associates and wanted to print my business card my biggest realization was that I could give myself whatever designation I wanted. That made it seem to meaningless. I realized that this meaningless nonsense was something that seemed to be so important when I worked for 16 years before that, in corporations. But that is one of the many things that’s wrong with organizational dynamics.

To return to Asif, what he achieved and continues to do is far more meaningful than climbing organizational ladders. I have had the honor of him visiting me at home in Hyderabad, with his wife and daughter. He is an inspiration to me and thousands of others.

Why are we scared / worried to hire who are different ? Recently I was speaking to a person who leads the D & I initiative for a large corporate and he shared most managers are unwilling to have them on the team. Is it they are reluctant to change self ? Are they saying we don’t want to deal with the challenge ?
As human race we have a lot to learn about accepting and celebrating differences in what ever kind they may exists

Intense and hard hitting. Going beyond the disability into our lives too . We define our life goal by the career positions we set for ourselves. Wonder if it is a typical middle class mentality .

But life is so much more than a career position and by the time we realize it we have lost lot of time .

So much to learn from the young man’s journey and so much to unlearn too
