The myopic vision of the capitalists is truly shocking. They don't even seem to worry about increasing the purchasing power of the people so that their profits will keep flowing in. Leaving more and more people deprived and impoverished is goint to hit them too as their income will dwindle. Forget humanity and kindnes, there isn't even logic and reason in what they do.

Very sad and helpless situation for the workers. It will take a lifetime for them to come out of this. Actually, the true reasons behind such a situation again is selfishness and greed which the management has cleverly exploited. Even the government will become or has become a mute spectator. In spite of good education and understanding many of the corporates lack the empathy to understand the plight of the workers and keep on doing such things. It is high time the government comes out with stricter provisions in the labour laws to address such things but again, this will only remain a dream which will never come true. Thanks to you for bringing such things to light so that we can at least hope that the next generation of entrepreneurs and corporate honchos not to commit such crimes....

Dear Vivek
Thanks for a 360 degree perspective on the subject . The vivid description of the aftermath is heart wrenching to say the least
I am at loss of words to express my feelings n sympathies for this group of employees . Very sadly Racold has got away with this step
The 50L payout made to divide and rule few workmen is quite well known. Reminds me of the Leading Auto major who paid hefty amounts to wean few Union leaders ( as reported in the Press) to end their IR impasse !! The Company has been receiving accolades for best people practices . Ironically, many HR meets n conferences are sponsored by them.
Whilst we have recognition of Companies/ best HR practices , high time that Companies with Unfair practices are called out !!
Once again, thanks for continuing to share ground realities

I think that I read about this story in your outstanding book if I’m not wrong. It was a terrible, inhuman way of closing down.I wonder if such a thing would have been possible without an underhand trade off with the State Government.I have personal and very unpleasant knowledge of such industrial relations tactics

The questions asked by you are extremely relevant. Could it have been done differently? This way, they lose the economic security but also the social security net of their friends, relatives and the community at large. They lose respect in the eyes of their neighbours. Given that the average longevity is increasing, whare are the funds to go on living till one is 80 years old? And that places pressures on children who have to sacrifice their ambitions to take care of their parents. The perpetrators of such acts do not really understand what they have actually set in motion. And the effect it has on the families, communities and the nation.

The condition of the 540 people impacted by the closure is a tip of the iceberg. The country after 77 years of independence has at least 540 million people who live on the edge with little hope other than 2/3 meals a day. Little focus on primary / secondary / high school education and woeful vocational courses condemn India to be a rich in “construction labour”. Sad indeed.

Surprisingly none of the Racold employees could make it to the ME where such skills maybe in much demand?
